10 Snack Ideas for Gestational Diabetics

Being diagnosed with gestational diabetes can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve had no previous experience with diabetes.  Suddenly, you’re bombarded with information about diet, exercise, ketones and blood glucose monitoring.  It’s hard to know where to start. You’re pregnant and always hungry, so what can you snack on to satisfy your hunger while still maintaining healthy blood sugar levels?  Just remember that snacks should contain about 15 grams of carbohydrates. Also, make sure to include protein and fibre to keep you feeling full and to prevent your blood sugar levels from spiking. Here are ten tasty and filling snack ideas that are perfect for gestational diabetics, other types of diabetics, or anyone looking for healthy snack options.

1.     Nachos made with 15-20 multigrain tortilla chips (check label for carb amount), cheese, green onions, olives, and salsa

2.     1 sliced peach, cottage cheese and chia seeds

3.     1 sliced apple with almond butter, sprinkled with cinnamon

4.     Half of a whole wheat English muffin, topped with a poached egg and ham

5.     6 whole wheat saltine crackers with cheese and garlic sausage

6.     1 granola bar (check label for carb amount) spread with natural unsweetened peanut butter

7.     6 ounces of Greek yogurt, sprinkled with a spoonful of high fibre, low sugar cereal (like Fibre 1)

8.     3 cups of air-popped popcorn and a handful of mixed nuts

9.     ½ of a 6” whole wheat pita spread with hummus, and Greek salad

10.  Half of a mini whole wheat bagel with strawberry cream cheese
