New Google Contact Lenses for Diabetes Management

Another one of those crazy, futuristic inventions is on its way! Google recently released information on a new project: diabetes contact lenses. Now, you’re probably wondering, “Why would someone with diabetes need to wear contact lenses?” Well you are definitely in for a treat.

Google aims to integrate a small, wireless chip and a miniature blood-glucose sensor into two layers of soft contact lens material. Rather than having to prick your finger every time you want to test your glucose levels, you would simply put in the contact lens. It automatically checks your blood glucose every second and may feature lights that would flash as a warning of high or low blood glucose levels.

“It’s still early days for this technology, but we’ve completed multiple clinical research studies, which are helping to refine our prototype,” the project team says. “We hope this could someday lead to a new way for people with diabetes to manage their disease.”

Unfortunately, Google’s announcement did not include information about medical trials or a projected release date. It stated that it is working with the FDA and looking for contributors to help with the development of the lenses. Click here to read Google’s full announcement!
