The Do’s and Don’ts of Diabetes

Diet is number one in managing your diabetes (keep up on your testing too).  If you’ve felt confused in the past, here is an easy “what not to eat” and why so you know where to begin with regard to healthy management.  Be sure to read to the end just so all hope is not lost!

Foods to avoid:

Sugary

  1. Frappucino-like Drinks (black coffee’s ok)
  2. Store Bought Baked Goods (tough, we know!)
  3. Regular Soda Pop (Yep, I said “Pop”)

Salty

  1. Frozen Meals (what do I eat now?)
  2. Processed Lunch Meat (ok fine.)
  3. Pizza, Fried Chicken, and Nachos (hey, that was 3!?)

Okay, so by now you may be thinking to yourself, “What am I supposed to eat? I’m kinda busy.”  And that is completely understandable.  However, there are lots of tasty treats you can have on a regular basis if you simply plan ahead.  Moderation is key and making sure your portions are in check will keep your blood sugar levels where you need them to be.  We have tools and bars to help if you are in a pinch or need a place to begin – simply click here to take a look.

Why can’t I have the stuff up above?

Well, you can but why not make an informed decision instead? The reasons not to are: the above foods are either high in sugar, processed carbs, sodium, or cholesterol.  All of which could be bad news for your diabetes and your heart; so instead, reach for something fresh. Fresh foods and healthily prepared ones will keep you healthy and your motor running for years and years to come.
