The Truth about Weight Loss and Diabetes

Yes, the habits that lead to being overweight can also lead to Type 2 diabetes – but what about after you’ve been diagnosed? What does weight loss do for you then?

After you have been diagnosed with diabetes, whether it is Type 1, Type 2 or Gestational, the truth is that excess weight can contribute to more diabetic complications.  This means, there is still a great motivating factor in your life to lose those extra pounds.  And in losing just a little bit of weight, you can gain extra energy and some peace of mind.  Well worth it if you ask me.

Start Feeling Better Now

Assess your lifestyle.  Find out what works for you.  No time to cook?  There are quick and healthy ways to make good food choices – just assess what will best fit in with your lifestyle at first.  Don’t set yourself up to fail or be miserable.  The idea is to choose items that you can live with. Starting off slow and sticking with a plan is much more effective than the yo-yo dieting of yesteryear.

Gather Support

Get your friends and family involved in being active with you.  It’s easier to be active with company.  Or, join a group for support and talk to your doctor about starting an exercise routine.  But, don’t forget it’s up to you to do the work! Personal responsibility is just as big as support in this.

Change Habits

Once you are ready to make a change and have assessed what you are prepared to change in your life to get healthy, then the real work in feeling good begins.  It will feel strange in the beginning but if you stick with it, the rewards will be much more than just avoiding the bad consequences of diabetes.  It will be increased energy and confidence when you get comfortable in your new habit patterns.
